Pitt Psychedelics and Christianity Project (Pitt PsyX)

Our flagship effort is “Christian Psychedelic Experiences,” a quantitative and qualitative study. The Pitt Institutional Review Board determined the study was exempt from review, though care has been made to preserve participants’ privacy and confidentiality.

Christian Psychedelic Experiences

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to study the ways people have a psychedelic experience that reminds them of something in Christianity, regardless of how they characterize Christianity and regardless of whether they identify as Christian. We hope to obtain a rich and comprehensive sense of Christian-related content in psychedelic experiences.

Design

We begin with a survey containing questions about the Christian elements in the participant’s psychedelic experiences and the opportunity to type a narrative of those experiences. The participant may also elect to narrate the experiences in a semi-structured interview with our team. We then analyze the survey results and interview transcripts using the tools of thematic analysis and content analysis.

We are still looking for participants! If you have had a psychedelic experience that reminds you of Christianity in some way, take our survey.
